POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a woman reported being raped in Newcastle in the early hours of Saturday (December 28).

Officers received the report that a 20 year-old woman had been raped, at a location yet to be identified, after a night out in the city.

Officers are keen to speak to a man who is believed to have assisted the woman into a taxi around 2.30am at the junction of Newgate Street and Grainger Street.

Det Chief Insp Dave Anderson said: "We are keen to speak to a man who is believed to have helped the woman into a taxi.

"I want to stress to this man he is not a suspect. He may have vital information which could help police with enquiries.

"We also ask anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward with any information."

If the man, the taxi driver, or anyone in the area at the time, has any information they are asked to call Northumbria Police on 101, ext 69191, quoting reference 137 281213, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
