HOUSEHOLDERS have been put on the alert after a sudden spate of pre-Christmas break-ins.

Three Great Ayton homes have been targeted over the last few days and police are urging residents not to let their guard down.

Burglars broke into a house on Roseberry Road and stole a wallet, jewellery, iPad and laptop before escaping in the family car which was parked on the drive.

Burglars also attempted to break into a house on Wheatlands and a third incident was reported in Cleveland Street when raiders entered a house through an insecure rear door and took computer games and Christmas presents.

Police warn that at this time of year, thieves know that homes are filled with gifts and will take any opportunity to steal them.

Sergeant Nick Hill of Stokesley Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Please ensure your home is not left in total darkness during the evening by using a light timer switch and a radio. A home left in darkness is an obvious sign that no-one is home.

“Even when you are at home, ensure your doors are locked and windows secured and do not leave high value items such as computers, iPads, mobile phones and desirable Christmas presents where everyone can see them through windows and doors.”
