THE organiser of a Christmas concert to raise money for teenage cancer patients is urging the people of the North-East to get behind the appeal.

Jonathan Wallis, a surveyor based in Wolsingham, County Durham, is chairman of the Teenage Cancer Trust North-East Fundraising Committee.

He is taking a leading role in organising this year's 1£0-a-head Teenage Cancer Trust Christmas Concert at St Nicholas Cathedral, in Newcastle on December 18.

The proceeds of the concert, which will feature Amelia Lily, Charlie Charlton, Billy Mitchell, Glen Roughead, Kate Fox, Ian Payne and David Leon, will be used to improve facilities at the Teenage Cancer Trust teenager-friendly unit at the regional cancer treatment centre in Newcastle.

In the last 18 months the TCT North-East committee has raised more than £140,000 for the charity.

The two-centre unit caters for young people aged between 13 and 18 at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and for 18 to 24 year olds at the Freeman Hospital.

Mr Wallis lost his best friend to cancer, when he was a boy.

He and his family have been raising money for the Teenager Cancer Trust ever since.

"It is astounding to know that six young people between 13 and 24 are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK," Mr Wallis said.
