THE family of a three-year-old who was killed in a hit-and-run paid tribute to their "very special boy" and "his cheeky little smile", as a man arrested in connection with his death was released without charge.

Danny Wake, from the Lascelles Park area of Darlington, was out walking with his mother, younger brother, and another young relative when he was struck by the vehicle on Monday morning.

Describing him as a "beautiful, loving and caring little boy", his family said they cannot find the words to describe how much he will be missed.

In a statement issued through Durham Police, they said: "Danny was a beautiful, loving and caring little boy, always laughing with a cheeky little smile.

"He had lots of friends and was adored by his little brother Georgie.

"We just can't find words to describe how much our very special boy will be missed by all of the family."

A 24-year-old man from Darlington who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving several hours after the collision was last night released without charge.
