PARTY nights for young revellers in a seaside town have been cancelled after becoming a magnet for anti-social behaviour.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, along with Cleveland Police and Jaz Promotions, have agreed to cancel the under-18 discos at Redcar Bowl.

The decision to axe the Powerhouse dance events - the next one was due to be held on Friday, December 29 - was taken to safeguard youngsters who attended the event, after reports of antisocial activities in the surrounding areas.

The council's cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, Councillor Dave Fitzpatrick, said: "While we are disappointed to have to cancel the event, the safety of the young people is always paramount and our first priority.

"The council and the police have offered to meet with the promoter and other agencies in the New Year to consider if and how these events can resume."

Promoter Jason Bushby said: "We are keen to stress there have been no problems inside the venue.

"All Powerhouse events are run professionally, and in co-operation with the police.

"We are in discussion with the council and local youth groups to bring the events back in a safe environment for everyone in the New Year."
