Following a fire in a conveyor transfer tower at the Port of Tyne yesterday (Friday) work has begun to assess and repair the damage and determine the cause.
The structure is external to the main wood pellet storage facility at the port. It provides the varying heights needed to connect conveyors transferring wood pellet to the rail loading silo.
The fire was quickly brought under control by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service. They remained on site overnight to ensure the material did not reignite and we are grateful for their assistance.
The wood pellet handling facility is expected to resume operations over the weekend. Wood pellet transferred from the Port of Tyne is used in power stations to generate electricity.
No other Port of Tyne operations are affected.
