SOUTH Durham residents who need to leave their homes unoccupied for some time are being invited to make the most of new equipment to beef up their security.

After a successful trial in the Bishop Auckland area over the summer, Durham police and the Neighbourhood Watch are rolling out their holiday kits across the area.

The kits comprise of numerous devices that make empty homes look lived in and improve the overall security of a house.

PC Dave Williamson Said: "If people know they are going to be leaving their homes empty, perhaps because they are going on holiday or into hospital, then these kits can be leant to them to give them extra piece of mind.

"We now have volunteers across the area who can advise homeowners and supply the security help they need."

Harold Wilsher, Neighbourhood Watch coordinator for Billy Row, has just started lending the kits to villagers.

He said: "the feedback has been excellent, people have said they feel more reassured that their houses are safe while they are away."

Devices in the kit include light and switch timers, a fake TV light and various alarms.

SmartWater kits property marking are also available for £10.
