A FAILED asylum seeker and a man who over stayed his visa were arrested by Home Office immigration staff in the North-East.

They swooped on The King’s Balti, Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland, and the Famous Food Store, Gresham Road, Middlesbrough, yesterday. (Thursday, October 10)

They arrested a 29-year-old man from Pakistan in Middlesbrough who had over stayed his visa limit and a 37-year-old Bangladesh man who was a failed asylum seeker.

Both are now detained pending their removal from the country.

The owners of the Famous Food Store were served with a civil penalty notice which could lead a £10,000 fine for employing an illegal worker.

The store’s owners will have to provide proof that the correct right to work checks were carried out such as seeing a Home Office document or passport to avoid the fine.

A civil penalty notice was not served to the owners of King’s Balti as there was insufficient proof that the man was working at the premises.

Anyone who suspects that illegal workers are being employed at a business or someone is living in the UK illegally can contact Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
