A GIRL who beat boredom by writing a letter to the Queen was delighted to receive a response from Buckingham Palace.

Ailish Wymer and her cousin Tom Brown, 16, decided to put pen to paper when they found themselves with nothing to do during the summer.

With the Royal baby due and Ailish still buzzing from the excitement of meeting Prince Charles at Auckland Castle, in Bishop Auckland, a year earlier, they decided to contact the Queen.

The ten-year-old said: “We put that I’d met Prince Charles, he rubbed my head and said hello at the castle.

“I said I hoped the royal baby would be okay when they were born and couldn’t wait to hear what it would be and its name.”

She also wrote that she likes being a pupil at St Wilfrid’s RC Primary School, in Bishop Auckland, which celebrated the Diamond Jubilee with a street party.

Then last Friday (Friday, October 4) Ailish got home from school to discover the letter she had been waiting for had arrived, on embossed paper and complete with a Royal seal.

Penned by Lady-in-Waiting Jennifer Gordon-Lennox, the letter says the Queen appreciated the letter and good wishes sent to the Royal family and that she was pleased to hear Ailish and her school friends enjoyed celebrating the jubilee.

Ailish said: “I was really shocked and really happy, I was a bit nervous opening it.

“I will treasure it for all time and look after it and keep it safe.”

Class teacher Cathryn Salter said: “She was very modest about it but we were so excited for her and proud that she had the initiative to write to the Queen and actually got a response.”
