A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a pensioner suffered serious head injuries following a vicious attack.

The 46-year-old remains in police custody while investigations continue.

Cleveland Police confirmed that the 65-year-old man who suffered his injuries in Chestnut Avenue in Redcar when walking his dog between Chestnut Avenue and the sea front and back between 9.30pm and 10.10pm on Wednesday, October 9.

Detective Chief Inspector Anne-Marie Salwey (CORR), who is leading the enquiry, said: “This was a vicious attack which has left the victim with serious head injuries. He is undergoing treatment and we expect he will be in hospital for some time.

“I would like to thank local residents who have been inconvenienced with the road closures in the area for their patience. Unfortunately, this will be on-going whilst we continue to search the area.”
