VISITORS will have the chance to see some of Durham Cathedral’s treasures up close from this weekend.

A series of Show and Tell events starts on Saturday (October 12) with a focus on early mathematical books from the Cathedral’s archives, including by Isaac Newton, Euclid and Hermannus Contractus.

The event, led by Gabriel Sewell, the Cathedral’s head of collections, will take place in the Cathedral library at 3pm.

She said: “The collections of historic artefacts, manuscripts and printed books at Durham Cathedral are a vital part of the Cathedral’s heritage.

“They represent the history of over 1,000 years of the Cathedral community, from the monastic Priory, the Cathedral and the diocese of Durham.

“Events such as Show and Tell are always lovely occasions to share what we have with visitors.”

Tickets are £5, or £4 for concessions. To book, go to the World Heritage Site visitors centre or call 0191-3343805.

Future events are planned for November 9, December 14, January 11 and February 8.

The Cathedral is trying to raise £10m for Open Treasure, a project to transform the visitor experience it offers and create world-class exhibition facilities for treasures from its archives and on loan from elsewhere.
