AN entrepreneur and a scientist from the North have made the shortlist of a national scheme to unearth the next generation of high-flying women.

Bishop Auckland businesswoman Sara Davies and stem cell researcher Rebecca Hill, from Billingham, near Stockton, are finalists in the 2013 Women of the Future Awards.

Mrs Davies, founder of Coundon-based Crafter’s Companion, an international manufacturer of craft products, has been shortlisted for the Entrepreneurial Woman of the Future Award.

She heads the creative trade association, Craft Hobby Association, is an investor at business support agency Gabriel Investors and a mentor to members of the Entrepreneur Forum and UKTI’s Catalyst group.

Rebecca Hill, a scientific researcher at Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies, has been nominated for a Woman of the Future in Science Award.

Her research in stem cells at Durham University provided the basis to establish Clarinnisbio Ltd, producers of skin regeneration products used for both clinical and cosmetic purposes.

The Women of the Future Awards, supported by Shell, were founded in 2006 to recognise women aged 35 and under who excel in business, the arts, science, technology and the professions.

Cherie Blair, patron of the awards, said: “Awards like this are vital as we work towards a world where women have equal opportunities.

“The awards give a platform to women whose own achievements show exactly why women with talent must be given the same opportunities as talented men.

“Celebrating these women will encourage others to follow in their footsteps, to pursue their dreams, and help inspire female leaders of the future.”

The award winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on Wednesday, November 13.
