POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man stole a ladies handbag from a Darlington social club.

The victim was volunteering at the Havelock Centre, in Katherine Street, on Sunday (October 6), when the incident happened.

She and fellow volunteers were cleaning up after an afternoon tea event for elderly people, when they spotted a young man in the lounge area, stealing the bag.

The victim, who is in her 60s, chased him from the building and he ran towards a navy blue people-carrier vehicle.

Police are unsure whether he got into the car or passed anything to the occupants but the vehicle drove off at speed, tyres screeching.

The stolen bag was a ladies cream/white bag with short handles and a tan motif design on the front. It contained the victim’s purse and a sum of cash.

The suspect is described as white, aged about 18 and wearing a light grey tracksuit hooded top with the hood pulled up over his head.

The top possibly had a blue sport motif across the front. He was also wearing light grey tracksuit bottoms and black trainers with an orange sole.

Detectives are asking anyone in the area who saw the suspect, or the navy blue people carrier to contact Detective Constable Vikki Cooper in the serious crime team, on 101, or Crimestoppers, on 0800-555-111.
