FORMER Boro star Terry Cochrane took a trip down memory lane yesterday to help open a fitness trail and bridleway.

Mr Cochrane, a wing wizard for Boro and Northern Ireland in the 1980s, joined international cyclist David Daniell, to promote the facilities at Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park, in Normanby. And he remembered how he helped launch the park's original climbing frames with his Boro teammates in 1983.

Middlesbrough-born Mr Daniell, a member of the Great Britain track cycling development team, who was shortlisted for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award, was joined by pupils from Eston Park School, to try out the exercise stations.

The facilities follow two successful funding bids by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's countryside rangers.

The family fitness trail, funded by £28,300 from the Impetus Environmental Trust, has 15 exercise stations.

The second project has received £23,600 from the council's local transport plan to create two bridleways linking existing bridleways to provide a route for horse riders, cyclists and walkers.

Cabinet member for rural affairs, Councillor Graham Jeffery, said: "Thanks to our partnership with the Impetus Environmental Trust, in particular, this excellent type of development is becoming possible and underlines the council's commitment to the environment and outdoor activity."
