A COUNCIL could be set to close its remaining residential care homes.

Cash-strapped Durham County Council is proposing to hold a three month consultation over the future of five homes.

They are Cheveley House, in Belmont; Feryemount, in Ferryhill; Grampian House, in Peterlee; Mendip House, in Chester-le-Street and Newtown House, in Stanhope.

Should councillors give the consultation the go-ahead at a cabinet meeting later this month the public will be asked for their comments on three proposals, namely:

  • Retaining the five homes and carrying out repairs and maintenance as required.
  • Closing them and seeking alternative accommodation for residents within the independent sector.
  • Seeking expressions of interest from other organisations who may wish to take over the homes.

Councillor Morris Nicholls, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for adult services, said: “The council has experienced significant budget reductions and as a result we are looking at all of our services to ensure they are cost effective and fit for purpose.”

In 2010 seven council-run care homes care homes were axed in a bid to save £35m.

Staff working for the care homes were handed letters today informing them of the council’s plans.

One member of staff, who did not want to be named, described the proposals as “atrocious”.

Meanwhile, the union Unison said it would campaign to keep the homes open and was preparing for a “fight” with the county council.
