A NATIONAL event to celebrate older people will be marked in Darlington for the third time.

Older People’s Day, on October 1, will take place at venues in the centre of town, with people of all ages invited to get involved.

The event has been organised by Darlington Borough Council, the Growing Older Living in Darlington group (Gold), Age UK Darlington and the NHS, with the theme ‘intergenerational skills sharing’.

Among the activities on offer will be music, dancing, arts and tips on how to stay active.

The music and activities will start at 10.30am in the Market Square with a brass band, followed by a ‘big draw’ in the library, a 1940s tea dance in the Dolphin Centre from noon and refreshments available from St Cuthbert’s Church and Age UK’s Bradbury House.

Councillor Veroncia Copeland, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for adult social care, said: “UK Older People’s Day has been a fantastic celebration in Darlington for the past couple of years and it’s excellent to see that the events are getting bigger and better every year."
