A RECORD number of people are due to take part in this year’s Stokesley Show.

Show organisers say they have seen a notable rise in entries for classes in this year’s show, due to be held on the showground on Saturday, September 21.

The annual show traditionally has classes for sheep, cattle, horses and poultry, all of which have seen a rise in numbers for this year.

Classes in baking, produce and arts and craft have also proved popular.

Show secretary Janette Hugill said: “We’ve got record entries this year, so we’re absolutely thrilled. The number of people entering the farm produce categories has tripled to 136 and in the children’s section we have 1,800 entries.

"It’s all the local schools and I think every child in the area has put an entry into the show, which is just lovely.

“I think a lot of television programmes and celebrities such as Kirsty Allsop and Mary Berry have inspired people to have a go at baking and handicrafts, but we have nearly 200 extra entries in the dairy, produce and handicraft sections.”

This year’s president will be the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Lord Crathorne, who was recently made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO).

He was previously made president in 2009, but due to bereavement had been unable to attend the show on the day.

The show will be kicked off with a parade of the Felling Brass Band along Stokesley High Street, leaving West Green at 9am and arriving on the showfield at 9.45am.

Some of the attractions in the main ring include equestrian events, a motorcycle stunt show, a parade of vintage tractors and a display by Cleveland Hunt Foxhounds and Stokesley Farmers’ Beagles.

Chainsaw artist Rodney Holland will also be demonstrating his work.

There will also be a dog show, stalls and trade stands.
