A NORTH-EAST town will come alive with the Sound of Music when an operatic society puts its own spin on the musical by inviting audience members to sing along.

Darlington Operatic Society will hold a one-off sing-along performance of the show as part of its run next month, when audience members will be encouraged to dress up and join in with the songs, while the actors play out the show on stage.

Members of the production team will also be providing a ‘warm-up’ session for the audience before the show, so everyone will be ready to join in from the first song.

Julian Cound, marketing manager for the operatic society, who will also play Captain von Trapp in the show, said: “This is a new venture for the society and we are sure it will attract people who like a bit of audience participation.”

Ticket sales have been encouraging for the sing-along performance, with audiences promised a fantastic night of fun and fancy dress.

Julian said: “We want to see people dressed as their favourite Sound of Music character or item, the more imaginative the better.

“We will be handing out spot prizes for the best fancy dress. Think of it as The Rocky Horror Show but with nuns and Nazis rather than basques and suspenders.”

The Sound of Music runs at the Darlington Civic Theatre from Wednesday, April 24 to Saturday, May 4.

The sing-along performance will be on the penultimate night, May 3.
