VOLUNTEERS are being invited to help shape the future of a North-East heritage attraction.

Auckland Castle, in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, is looking to add to its team of more than 40 volunteer guides and stewards to support longer opening hours.

The long awaited multi-million pound sale of the castle and the famous Zurbaran paintings from the Church Commissioners to philanthropist Jonathan Ruffer was completed last year.

Work is underway on a master plan for the future of the castle and its gardens in the hope of attracting at least 120,000 visitors a year.

More than 200 people enjoyed the first in a series of open days at the castle on Easter Monday.

The volunteers are responsible for running the open days and are encouraging people to get involved.

Marion Blackett, who has volunteered for 20 years, said: “Auckland Castle is a fascinating place to work and it’s a real privilege to play a part in showcasing this local treasure to visitors.

"The plans that are being put in place by Mr Ruffer and the team are marvellous and this is a really exciting time for people to get involved in a volunteering capacity.”

Rowena Hackwood, Auckland Castle’s chief executive, said: “We’re always keen to add volunteers to the team, so anyone who can spare some time to be a part of the future of Auckland Castle should get in touch.”

The castle will be open from 11am to 4pm on Sundays and Mondays throughout April and from May 1, the castle will open from 10am to 4pm every day except Tuesday.
