POLICE have appointed a new officer to crack serious crime in north Durham.

Detective Inspector Gavin Heckles will be responsible for policing in the Derwentside and Chester-le-Street area.

The 35-year-old, who joined Durham Constabulary in 2004, will focus on cases involving wounding, burglary, robbery, sex offences and serious organised crime.

He said: “I am firm but fair and always put the victim first. Thos people who choose to offend and not take the support available to them should know we are going to come down hard on them. It is as simple as that.”

Det Insp Heckles, who is married with three children, is keen to hear from the community to help him catch people suspected of serious criminality.

He added: “We are working hard to make our communities safer for people.

“I will speak to anyone and meet people as well as attending our public meetings.

“So if anyone has got any concerns that they want to raise with me they can contact me directly. It is the people that determine what we focus on.”
