A WOMAN had to be given oxygen by firefighters after a blaze at her home.

The fire started in the bedroom of a property in Carter Close, Colburn, Catterick Garrison, on Sunday evening.

Although no-one was injured a female occupant, believed to be in her late teens, complained of smoke inhalation.

She was given oxygen at the scene, but declined hospital treatment. The fire - the cause of which is to be determined - triggered a smoke alarm and was attended by four fire appliances from both Catterick and Colburn stations.

Firefighters were called to the house at about 8.23pm and used hose reels to put out the fire. The bedroom was described as 20 per cent fire damaged, while there was smoke damage elsewhere in the property.

They spent about two hours at the scene, damping down. It is understood an ambulance and police were also present.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said it was not the first time they had been called to a fire at the property.

The house in question had previously been refurbished by the local council, residents said.
