VANDALS are being urged to come forward and own up to damage to avoid getting a criminal record.

Those responsible for graffiti and damage in the Craghead regeneration area have been offered an amnesty against arrest and criminal prosecution.

But they must come forward voluntarily and agree to take part in restorative measures.

It is part of Durham Constabulary’s drive to become a leading light in community-based restorative approaches, Sergeant Dave Clarke, of Stanley neighbourhood policing team, said: “Millions of pounds has been spent on trying to make Craghead a nicer place to live and the efforts are being spoilt by a handful of people who have no regard for other people’s property.

“We are working with the Durham County Council housing regeneration and anti-social behaviour teams to identify the culprits.

“If people come forward at this stage to admit the damage, I can guarantee that they won’t be arrested and if they comply with what we ask, I can also guarantee they will not get any form of criminal record.”

The damage was carried out during last month and involves paint sprayed on walls near houses that have been upgraded as part of an extensive regeneration programme.

Sgt Clarke added: “If they decide not to come forward and we trace them through CCTV, community contacts and forensic evidence, then we will do our best to prosecute them and see them in court.

"This is a great opportunity for parents to ensure their children don’t end up with a criminal record.”

The restorative approach can take many forms, depending on the person that has harmed the community and the level of damage.

The culprit may have to apologise in person to the community and people affected or have to do some sort of unpaid work in the community such as removing graffiti or spending an afternoon planting flowers.

Sgt Clarke added: “Some people may think this is a soft option, but I have seen it in action and I can assure you it is not.

“To make someone face the music like this can also prevent further offending and cut instances of damage dramatically.”
