TEACHERS put themselves in the firing line when pupils came up with ideas to raise money for Comic Relief and Unicef.

Top of the list for youngsters at The Oaks Secondary School, in Spennymoor, County Durham, was to make a donation so they could gunge and throw wet sponges at staff.

Teachers Lee Davis, Les keen and Sarah Phillips were the unlucky ones but more staff could find themselves in detention tomorrow (Friday, March 15) when pupils force them to write lines for offences such as having coffee breath, handing out too much homework or telling bad jokes.

The school, which caters for pupils with special needs, has four family groups that encourage children of different ages and abilities to work as teams on shared projects and lessons.

Each group also took part in a morning of fundraising from running food and book stalls, treasure hunts to an I’m a Pupil Get Me Out of Here challenge.

Each week pupils have a lesson based on the Unicef children’s rights campaign so proceeds from the fundraising events will be shared between the charity and Comic Relief.

Assistant headteacher Helen Crawford said: “The school is often the recipient of donations which is very nice but we think it is important for our young people to raise money and be aware of those worse off than them.”
