British Transport Police (BTP) have released an image of a man they would like to speak after an assault on a train which left the victim with a broken nose and needing stitches.

The attack happened on a Newcastle to Middlesbrough train on on Saturday, February 2.

Investigating officer PC Ian Donnelly said: “Around 10pm, the victim was travelling on the 9.50pm service to Middlesbrough.

“Before the train approached Chester-le-Street rail station, a man walked up to the victim and punched him in the face, completely unprovoked.”

Officers conducted several lines of enquiry into the incident and made an arrest shortly afterwards, however no further action was taken against the person.

Police are now calling on the public’s help to identify the man in the picture, who they believe can assist them with their enquiries.

PC Donnelly continued: “Aside from understandably being left shocked by the incident, the victim also sustained a broken nose and cut lip as a result of the assault.

“It is crucial we find the man responsible, and I would ask anyone who was on the train at the time to come forward.

“If you recognise the man pictured, then please get in touch as we would like to hear from you.”
