Police have issued an appeal over a deactivated firearm stolen in a house burglary.

The Colt 44 revolver, which has blocked barrels and no firing mechanism, was taken in a break-in at a house in Fencehouses, between Houghton-le-Spring and Chester-le-Street.

Intruders appear to have gained access to the property, off Durham Street, via an insecure door before taking the revolver and a bottle of whisky.

Police are keen to trace the 'weapon', which was owned for display purposes only, as it has no capacity to fire ammunition.

Inspector Lisa Musgrove, who leads the local neighbourhood policing team, said: “We’re appealing for anyone who sees this stolen firearm, or knows of its whereabouts, to get in touch at the earliest opportunity.

“I would also urge anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area, or who witnessed the burglary, to get in touch with us.

“We’re carrying out inquiries to trace those responsible and extra patrols are taking place in the area.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, extension 69191, or anonymously via the Crimestoppers’ freephone line, on (0800) 555111.
