THE striking result of an innovative project combining mathematics and the arts has been unveiled at a County Durham school.

‘Capture,’ an eye-catching piece of modern art created by Darlington artist Vicky Holbrough of Navigator North, is now on display at Greenfield Community and Arts College in Newton Aycliffe.

Ms Holbrough worked with a year eight maths class to produce the piece, which was inspired by the results of a survey gauging how pupils feel about their school.

In the questionnaire, the pupils asked their classmates about all aspects of school life, including their safety, community involvement and whether they felt valued and listened to.

The percentage results were then passed on to Ms Holbrough who attached colour coded, dip-dyed cable ties to a three dimensional grid to create a visual representation of their findings.

Headteacher, David Priestley, said the pupils should be very proud of themselves.

“This is a very exciting piece of artwork that not only looks beautiful but shows that numbers and statistics can inspire creativity,” he said.

“What has been created will be of value to the whole school.”
