Sunderland council cuts 'could top £100m'

A NORTH-East council could face cuts of more than £100m over the next three years.
That is the warning contained in a report to be discussed by Sunderland City Council’s cabinet tomorrow (Wednesday, January 16).
The council has already cut £100m from its spending in the last three years.
But Labour council leader Paul Watson said more tough decisions lay ahead.
“There is no certainty about anything, but we have to look at what is likely to happen and that is not a good picture.
“We will be concentrating on doing the things we have to do by law.
“Other things will suffer – free services that we don’t have to, by law, supply.”
Conservative group leader Robert Oliver defended the Coalition’s local government settlement, which has seen council grants cut, saying it reflected the “necessity of reducing the deficit”.
Independent group leader, Colin Wakefield, urged Labour and the Tories to put aside their political differences for the benefit of Sunderland.
