STUDENT volunteers are wearing their hoodies with pride - after being rewarded for their work in the community.

Scores of sixth formers at Northallerton College have won recognition and been presented with official hoodies to wear when they are lending a helping hand.

The jade green sweatshirts carry the acronym SLiCE – Student Leadership, involvement and Community Engagement – the college brand, their names and a list of the volunteering which they are involved in.

Northallerton College’s assistant principal and head of sixth form Bronia Harris said: “The students have really appreciated being given a hoodie.

“By wearing them it is a visual reminder to the college community and raises the profile of all the good work the student volunteers carry out.”

Community work ranges from helping younger students with their reading and sports coaching, to working with students with special needs from the nearby Dales School.

Mrs Harris said: “Because we are a 14-19 college this provides the opportunity for older students to work with younger ones.

“Volunteering helps sixth formers develop their skills, in particular communication and time management skills. It is excellent experience for them and also boosts their personal statement when they apply for university.

“It is a great way to engage with younger students, some of whom relate better to other students than they do adults.”
