MIDDLESBROUGH Train Station has now reopened after it was evacuated when a bottle containing a suspicious liquid was found on board a train.

British Transport Police were called at about 7.15pm on Sunday following reports of a burning smell on board a Northern Rail train due to travel from Middlesbrough to Darlington.

A transport police spokesman said: “On further inspection officers found a bottle containing an unknown substance on board the train. The fire brigade was called to identify the substance. The train and station were evacuated as a precaution.

“No one is believed to have sustained an injury.”

Cleveland Fire Brigade confirmed that officers attended the scene, although was unable to say what was in the bottle.

Watch manager Peter Jones said the liquid had been identifed, but police had asked that it not be identified for the time being while an investigation into the incident took place.

Buses were brought in to replace scheduled train services between Middlesbrough and Darlington, Saltburn and Hartlepool while emergency services deal with the incident.

The train station reopened at about 10pm on Sunday.

So there was a funny smell and a bottle of liquid (the report does not suggest that the latter was on fire). was the liquid by any chance yellow and the bottle warm?
