LUCKY ESCAPE: The wreckage of the car that crashed into the attached garage in Ferryhill Station
A FAMILY had to be evacuated from their home in Ferryhill Station, County Durham, after a car crashed into their garage yesterday evening (January 5).
Luckily, the family and the driver escaped uninjured from the incident, which occurred when a grey Seat Ibiza left the road and collided with the garage attached to the property on Gipsy Lane at around 5.50pm.
Police and firefighters attended the scene and the road was cordoned off for two hours.
The impact of the crash also triggered a major gas leak and a gas engineer was called out to isolate and a repair the damaged pipe.
The driver of the car, a male in his late teens from the Ferryhill area, did not require hospital treatment and remained at the scene.
The family have now returned to the property, which has been assessed as safe by a structural engineer.
A police investigation into the cause of the accident is now underway.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Durham Police on 101.
