A LONG established choir hopes to hit the right note with potential recruits at forthcoming rehearsal nights.

Shiney Row Male Voice Choir, which draws singers from across Wearside and north Durham, is seeking a fresh intake to boost numbers prior to its busy 2013 programme.

The choir was formed in 1959 at Trinity Methodist Church, just off the A183 Chester-le-Street to Sunderland road, at Shiney Row, on Wearside, where it is still based.

It is described as “non-competitive”, existing to, “further the tradition of male voice singing”, performing a mixed music repertoire at up to 15 concerts each year, including a traditional busy pre-Christmas run.

Under only its fourth musical director and conductor, Stephen Wroe, the choir’s current roster of 47 singers includes 27 bass/baritones and 20 tenors.

But the appeal has gone out to any male singer, aged 16 - 90, regardless of pitch or ability to give it a try.

Rehearsals begin for the forthcoming season at the church, on Friday January 11, between 7 and 9pm.
