A NORTH-East church will take part in a nationwide attempt to set a new world record for the most people simultaneously singing a Christmas carol this weekend (December 16).

St Margaret’s Church, on Crossgate, Durham City, will join hundreds of churches across the country for the Guinness World Record attempt on Sunday at 7pm.

The current record was set last year when churches across the UK and overseas attracted 18,114 singers to perform five carols in unison.

This year’s carols will be: Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Away in a Manger and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.

Premier Christian Radio, which is leading the stunt, will also play the carols live, providing backing music.

Rev Barnaby Huish, rector of St Margaret’s, said: “So many people enjoy carol singing. We’d be delighted to welcome as many as possible to sing together at St Margaret’s on Sunday 16th, as part of this nationwide carol extravaganza.”

Doors open at the church at 6.30pm. Mulled wine and mince pies will be served afterwards.
