1.6 tonnes of cannabis seized at North-East port

CANNABIS with an estimated street value of £7m has been seized at a North-East port.

Around 1.6 tonnes of the drug was hidden in a truck carrying lip balm which was stopped in North Shields.

The lorry was on a ferry from Amsterdam to Tyneside when it was intercepted by Border Force officials on Wednesday (November 14).

A 25-year-old Dutch man has appeared before Newcastle Magistrates’ Court charged with importation of a Class B drug.
