What was your first car?

It was an old racing green Renault Clio. It was my grandad's car, and when he eventually admitted he shouldn't be on the road anymore I think I paid him about a grand for it. It was steady and unspectacular and got me up and down the M1 to London when I started working at the BBC. It eventually fell to pieces in Headingley when I was driving to watch Leeds Rhinos. I left it on the side of the road and it got scrapped from there - never saw it again.

The Northern Echo:

How many times did it take to pass your test?

I passed first time and had about 20 lessons. I had the same instructor that my sister had, can't remember what his car was. He used to keep me entertained with stories of my sister's folly on the roads.

Who would be your ideal fantasy passenger and where would you go?

I prefer driving alone. I like to zone out and clear my mind. Sorry that's a rubbish answer.

What is your dream car?

To be honest I don't think I have one. A car has always been purely functional for me. So long as it moves smoothly without feeling like you need to be pedalling up a hill, and looks nice enough then I'm not too fussed.

How would you describe your driving style?

I'd like to think I'm a reasonable driver. I do like a bit of pace, but I'm not stupid enough to drive dangerously. I do get agitated with idiots though. Middle-lane and even worse, outside-lane hoggers on the motorway. A lot of the time I am driving while shaking my head.

Tell me one driving anecdote from your past?

I almost wiped out a dog on my driving test. I'm a huge lover of dogs so that would have been horrible. I remember it flying out of a hedge on to the road in front of us. Fortunately, I slammed on the breaks and came to an immediate halt which enabled me to pass the emergency stop part of the test.

What are you listening to?

The Northern Echo: The son spoke to BBC Radio Five Live about his rapist father

I either listen to the Radio 5 Live obviously, or have my itunes set up via the Bluetooth on my phone. Radio if it is sport that I need to be across for work, music if I want to escape.

What do you drive now?

The Northern Echo:

A little five-door Audi A1 S-line TDI in brilliant black. Love it. Why? Well I've only had it a few months. My trusty old Mazda MX-5 died a death when I was smashed into a traffic island by an oncoming vehicle which then fled the scene. As I had no details I had to scrap the car as it wasn't worth claiming on my insurance, so I got the new one on a lease deal. I chose the Audi as it was a car I'd always fancied, but had never been able to afford.
