What was your first car?

I drove lots of different cars after passing my test, including a bright orange Ford Capri. Less impressive was a meat delivery truck which didn’t exactly smell of roses as you might imagine. A beaten up old Mini used to get me from art college in Surrey home to Halifax, but after the rusty hood lid rotted through and blew off on the motorway I decided that when I got my first real job I’d go ahead and get myself a car that I could trust would take me from A to B. A white Ford Fiesta was my reliable, and somewhat sensible car, that I bought with my first wages.

How many times did it take to pass your test?

I passed first time just after my 17th birthday, taught largely by my two sisters who were slightly older than me, my boyfriend at the time and a family friend. Anyone really, who could bear to be in the same car as me.

Who would be your ideal fantasy passenger and where would you go?

Anyone who can belt out a good tune - I love singing in the car, and my singing voice needs a bit of drowning out… Doris Day or Barbara Streisand maybe.

The Northern Echo: Doris Day is a fan of Michael Buble

What is your dream car?

I’d love the Aston Martin Vanquish please – in Hammerhead silver with ten-spoke wheels with gloss black and diamond-turned finish. I can pick it up anytime.

Tell me one driving anecdote from your past?

I drove a bright red Ferrari Enzo in Southern Italy and literally all the drivers on the autoroute pulled over as they saw us approach in their rear view mirrors and watched the dream machine fly past – it was exhilarating from the minute the engine roared into life to the second I stepped clear of the butterfly doors.

The Northern Echo: Jay Kay's Ferrari Enzo was damaged following an alleged row at a hotel

How would you describe your driving style?

Great – safe with your granny, but I can pull torque with the boy racers.

What are you listening to?

Old school Michael Jackson, Hozier and BBC London Radio – even when I’m home in Yorkshire.

What do you drive now?

I drive a Mini Cooper S, black, manual, three-door hatch with black spoke wheels and all the gadgets – it’s fab.
