What was your first car?

My first car was a V reg white Fiesta – it cost £800 and had a red interior. My dad was insistent on checking the distributor and points constantly. The manual choke was something I miss. It’s always good to something to fiddle with on long journeys.

How many times did it take to pass your test?

I passed first time. It was with the local driving school. The instructor, whose name I’ve forgotten, smoked constantly. He had very thin fingers and held the cigarette very delicately. He also had a tash and a perm. All very 80s.

Who would be your ideal fantasy passenger and where would you go?

The Northern Echo: Cristiano Ronaldo plays for Real Madrid

I’d like to give Cristiano Ronaldo a lift from Manchester Airport to Old Trafford to re-sign for Manchester United – I’d pay the car park fee and everything.

What is your dream car?

I had a Saturday job working for a bloke delivering furniture. He talked constantly of his pride and joy as a young man. A Jensen Interceptor. He spoke about it so lovingly and in a whispered breathy voice, I wish I could get one, and let him have a drive in it for old time’s sake.

How would you describe your driving style?

I’m decent I think. I drive a lot at night, which is frustrating as the motorways are always being closed and diverted. I went on a speed awareness course a while ago, and it really hit home. I learned a lot.

What are you listening to?

I listen to audiobooks and podcasts. I’m relatively recently fascinated by British history. Oh, I can lose myself in the Jacobite Rebellion going down the M6.

What do you drive now?

We’ve got a family Mercedes E350 estate, which is only five years old. We’ve had it from new and stuck 100,000 miles on it so far. It’s ideal though for the wet dog, stick the kids’ bikes on the roof and away we go. I think I’ll keep it forever - it’s a great car.
