FRED HODGSON emails in a picture of the Salmon Tin Dribblers of Hurworth. It’s definitely Hurworth, as the boys are standing on the village green with the castellated Dovercourt house behind them (Echo Memories last visited Dovercourt in 2001 – we’ll post the article on the blog on the Echo’s website). Fred thinks the picture is from the Thirties, although it could be earlier. He also wagers that the unusual name of the team is derived from the village’s All Saints Church – Sts becoming the Salmon Tins.

“It’s the sort of thing they did in those days,” he says.

Hurworth has a surprisingly long footballing history. The village club entered the 1882-83 Durham Challenge Cup, and in 1892-93 reached the third qualifying round of the FA Cup.

However, they failed to field a team even though they were drawn at home and their opponents, Darlington FC, went through with a walkover.

Do you recognise any of the Salmon Tin Dribblers?
