What was your first car?

The Northern Echo: Jerry and Lesley Shepperd from Colyton in their historic Mini on last year's Classic Tour.

My first car was my Mum’s old blue Mini. I used to drive it everywhere when I was working the club circuit. I would drive to places like Newcastle and Batley with all my frocks piled up in the back. It was tiny but I loved to bomb around in that little car. It was perfect for getting around London,so nifty and easy to park.

How many times did it take to pass your test?

I passed on my second occasion. I learnt to drive mostly with my cousin Michael who would take me out in my Dad’s old Bedford bakery van. I think it was the only vehicle anyone would have trusted me with!

Who would be your ideal fantasy passenger and where would you go?

The Northern Echo: Michael Jackson

If he were still here, Michael Jackson! We would drive down to his Neverland Ranch playing great tunes, chatting about music and singing. He was the perfect entertainer, hugely talented and left a void which will not be filled.

What is your dream car?

The Northern Echo: Soon to hit the road: Tesla has opened up in the UK

One of those stunning Tesla electric cars. Not only do they look smart and sporty, but they are eco-friendly and not harmful to the environment. God willing, if my next album is a success and people keep coming to my concerts, then I may be able to afford one!

How would you describe your driving style?

I would describe it very differently to how my husband would describe it! In fact, the last time I drove him anywhere, he got out and walked home. I consider myself a very conscientious driver who is careful and aware.

Tell me one driving anecdote from your past?

Driving back from Lynton several years ago, I managed to completely turn over my 4x4. Nobody else was involved and thankfully a lovely couple helped pull me out. I walked away relatively unscathed with a graze on my head and a bruise on my arm. It’s a notorious road and I believe where I overturned is now known as ‘Elk Corner’!

What are you listening to?

The Northern Echo:

There’s a song I love at the moment called ‘Down the Road’ by C2C. Lately I have loved listening to Ed Sheeran and a great young UK blues artist called Chantel McGregor. I do like listening to younger acts, they are far less inhibited than some of the old stalwarts.

What do you drive now?

The Northern Echo: Volkswagen Polo

I’ve got a lovely little white VW Polo at the moment. It’s safe, sturdy and best of all, it fits on the drive! My Trev drives a Nissan Navara which we travel to the gigs in. It’s comfy and roomy, but really guzzles the old diesel.
