REGARDING Tony Kelly’s wish that he had worked in the mines (HAS, July 1).
My husband worked in the pits in the 1950-60s. He was lying in a 3ft high seam in water using a windy pick.
In his early 30s he was brought home in an ambulance with a slipped disk, he was unable to work for three months.
There were also rats running around and no toilets.
Imagine a working Monday after a weekend of heavy drinking. He died aged 74 years with symptoms caused by pit work.
I Dunn, Crook.
