PETER Mullen made some good observations in his column about combating ISIS (Echo, June 29).

We confront an enemy at the gate as threatening as Hitler’s Germany in the 1930s and should meet it with the same resolve as Winston Churchill did then.

I think we should do this in co-operation with our Muslim communities.

No matter which religion we privately have, or whether or not we are of religious faith, the one thing to unite us is protecting all that is good in our society.

It is about eschewing extremism, but more specifically intolerance for others with a different outlook to us.

There have been times I have felt Reverend Mullen has been on the verge of doing so. Similarly I feel David Cameron should heed the counsel of Baroness Varsi more often.

The death cult in the Middle East is a perversion of Islam.

How do we defeat it and how did it take hold in the first place?
