I read with interest an article in a Sunday newspaper about the current planning situation regarding Sirius Minerals/Yorkshire Potash which goes before the North York's Park Planning Committee on June 30.

It has already been approved by Scarborough and Redcar & Cleveland borough councils and only awaits this final approval. However, the article suggests it may not be passed.

This would be tragic for all the people of this area who are looking forward to the chance of employment in an industry that offers the prospect of generations of work and pays good honest wages.

This would be coupled with the chances for training and development for many in the years to follow that will create prosperity from Whitby to Middlesbrough.

I hope the retired members on this committee have some thoughts for the younger people of this area who are desperate to enjoy the benefits enjoyed by members of this planning group.

The effects to the moors are minuscule and will not be noticed other than in the minds of the planners who do not need a job to pay their way.

Surely projects like this should be the backbone of the Northern Powerhouse plan?

I call on James Wharton MP to pull his finger out and make this project a priority.

By doing so he will demonstrate to the people of this area that he means business and is more interested in real jobs today rather than pushing fracking and more devolved power for tomorrow.
