REGARDING Dorothy Lincoln’s letter about cycling in Darlington town centre (HAS, Mar 26), I too have been reading people’s opinions over the months.  My husband and I are cyclists in the country and beach resorts, where possible, but not in towns.

We enjoy going over to St Annes and riding along Blackpool prom which has enough width for all pedestrians and riders. A few times riding along the prom a pedestrian will suddenly walk sideways and you have to change your direction – after all, what person walking along will look behind to overtake another?

There should either be definite cycle lanes marked out in all parts of town, or cyclists should dismount and walk along out of way of pedestrians.

Holland has the perfect solution, with respect for cyclists even incorporated into their traffic lights. It is second nature to the Dutch to respect cyclists, but to England all this is new and we have to learn through mistakes – preferably with no human injuries.
