DURHAM County Council is anxious to resurrect its ridiculous County Durham Plan (Echo, Mar 25).

It seems to me that the council should listen to the people who voted its members into office, instead of a few businessmen whose only interest is that they hope to make money from the plan.

As an example of how ridiculous the plan is, in my area it allows for 800 new houses in Crook, but with no additional school places, or doctor's surgery. The A68 is very busy, and Neville's Cross is a four mile traffic jam during the rush hour. The so-called plans for a by-pass have been in existence for the past 20 years, and never implemented, so I won't hold my breath for that to happen.

In addition, there are innumerable houses already for sale in Crook, most of which are sold at auction for considerably less than their value.

The town no longer has a petrol station, and unless the Post Office can find premises in the next two months, that service will disappear as well.

Instead of building a lot of houses in one area, and putting all the work in another, it's time they planned to bring work nearer to the areas where people already live. If people had employment, they might be able to buy houses but at the moment, that isn't an option for most people.

New social housing is a more useful idea.
