YOUR important editorial comment on “Darlington College’s fall from grace” (Echo, Mar 21) does not mention the biggest issue of all: the failure of the governors. The Ofsted report is severely critical of them.

Your comment says: "It is now down to Kate Roe to rebuild the college’s reputation.” Her role is vital but the rebuilding has got to start with the chair and the governors and their getting a grip on governance.

Since the publication of the Ofsted report, chair of governors Alasdair McConachie has resigned. He has given great service to the town and the college over a long period and this should be fully recognised. However, the last five years have been highly damaging. It is a huge mistake to perpetuate chairmanships over decades.

I wish the college and it’s staff well as it rebuilds under new leadership. It is an important institution which needs to perform at the highest level. It has done so in the past and can do so again.

Alan Coultas, Darlington.
