THE main political parties agree that after the General Election in 2015 further swingeing cuts to Government spending will have to be made to get the uncontrollable deficit down.
Even those who are still in Westminster and were involved with the doubling of Government spending, which exacerbated the current crisis and who refuse to apologise for their reckless behaviour, now want to slash and burn.
As there is a consensus for cuts, why can they not all get together and thrash out a common approach to try and solve the unsolvable in the name of the common good. They are always telling us that we – the common people – are all in this together, so surely they should all be working together on our behalf.
But it seems narrow political dogma trumps all other considerations and our politicians ignores the majority who want an end to all the squabbling and theatrical posturing that impresses nobody and achieves nothing.
As the historian Max Hastings says, our current system of government is “an embarrassment to its own members and to the electorate”. I could not have put it any better – well politely, that is.
