I WOULD like to congratulate Spencer Turner, ten, of Newcastle, on his wonderful design for the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to commemorate the 1914 Christmas Truce.
This young man from the North-East of England was overwhelmed when his design was first chosen out of all the those entered, but he kept it together at the ceremony when he was congratulated by Prince William and said he would never forget that day.
His family must have been so proud.
It is so good to see such a young person with so much talent having the humility to think of how to commemorate the ordinary soldiers of that war on both sides. It is just a pity the people in charge at that time did not have the same common sense as the lads that had to fight and die for their countries.
In my opinion, Spencer’s design was much superior to the Uefa monument placed in Ploegsteert, Belgium. I hope he goes on to do great things in the future. Good luck, Spencer.
