REGARDING the story about health workers who are sick of low pay and being treated as second-class citizens (Echo, Oct 14).
Intrigued, I researched the salaries for the 1,203,519 NHS staff in England in 2012.
I found that the minimum starting salary for a registered nurse is £21,478 per year. That’s £413 per week.
A modest figure you might say but on further investigation the NHS stated for the year 2012 the following wages were paid (with overtimes etc): average wage for nurses: £30,562 per year, paramedic £36,130 per year, manager, £47,702 per year and a consultant earned a cool £109,651 per annum.
Probably the wages are well deserved, but they are not the wages of second-class citizens. For the nurses etc to receive a fair wage, the system needs to be totally re-negotiated.
