EVERY year, Vince Cable gives his pitch from the left for leadership of the Lib Dems in the next Parliament, although he is in fact an old SDP hand.
Every year after conference, he then goes back to being in the Cabinet. Specifically, he has responsibility for the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), and he privatised the Royal Mail.
Of course. TTIP is the coming to fruition of an explicit Lib Dem objective ever since the merger of the Liberals and the SDP. The privatisation of the Royal Mail was a Lib Dem manifesto commitment in 2010.
For decades, the Lib Dems were treated as a joke and subjected to no scrutiny. That was always fun, but it was always irresponsible. Once they became a party of government, then it became a full-blown dereliction of responsibility.
