This futile fast is a complete waste of time

PRAYER GESTURE: Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu

WHILST I think that the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has his heart in the right place, I feel that his act of fasting and praying for peace in our time for six days will not make the slightest bit of difference.

It may make him feel a little better but it is a complete waste of time. What is needed is proactive, constructive, positive and direct action by all our leaders to try and bring about a reduction of what Dr Sentamu calls “military idolatry”.

It is being proved every day that “belief in a cruel God makes a cruel man”.

I do not hold out much hope for a lasting peace until we can all accept and respect the differences in our various cultures and co-exist as equals peacefully.

Sadly, that is not going to happen. Well, not in this century anyway.

M Hawkins, Durham.

Perhaps John Sentanu's actions may just start the ball rolling. From little acorns mighty oaks can grow.

A nice sentiment but sadly, throughout its history, religion has offered no lasting peace or respect to anyone outside of said religion.

Agreed Yemen. At least he is harmless and can safely be ignored.

Religion or politics are usually the reasons behind wars. The only benefit this fasting will do will be to shave a few pounds off Mr Sentamus waistline.
