I HAVE heard Dolly Parton’s new single, Try, from her Blue Smoke album, twice on early morning BBC Radio 2 and I must say how impressed I was with the lyrics and, of course, her voice.
I first saw Miss Parton in the flesh with my wife at Mervyn Conn’s International Country Music Festival at Wembley stadium in April 1976.
Country music was in its heyday then.
Other artists performing that weekend were Don Williams, Marty Robbins and Vernon Oxford.
Dolly would only be about 30 then but she still sounds as good as ever 38 years later. How many other singer songwriters could you say that about comparing her with today’s performers? I only hope lots of today’s generation listen to her words. I am sure they will be inspired.
